This Sunday is the Chris Williford Second Wind Regatta, taking the place of practice for a very important reason. Many of you know Chris, or his background, but for newer families, Chris is a product of the LYC Opti program, who rose through our ranks to win North Americans, Nationals, and a host of other titles. Last year he was diagnosed with leukemia, has received a bone marrow transplant, and has a long road ahead. But he has us on his team, and we help our own.
Sunday is three things -- a fundraiser for Chris and his family, a party for everyone, and some sailing for our sailors. Please have the kids rigged and ready by 9:00 before the close of registration and the 9:30 skippers meeting. The first race starts at 10:15, right in front of the club, and will involve every class of boat LYC can put on the water. Registration costs $100 and we're asking everyone to participate. This will be an amazing show of support for our crewmate Chris and his family.
A few important details:
Do not bring lunch. The kids will have a fun lunch break to enjoy the cookout on shore that is open to anyone and everyone for a low cost.
Please plan to stay yourself. Jody Lewis is organizing multiple, entertaining activities throughout the day and everyone is welcome to stay.
Awards will take place and the day will wrap up at 4:45.
Sunday will be a triple success: sailing, good camraderie, and the chance to help one of our extended family who really needs it.
Thank you.

LYC Secures National Team Practice
LYC has been selected as one of the four locations for a Opti U.S. National Team Practice for the coming year, USODA announced today. The U.S. National Team consists of the top 45 Opti sailors from Team Trials, coached by a coordinated group of the nation's best Opti coaches led by Amanada Clark, the U.S. Olympic 470 skipper in the 2012 Olympic Games. Our USNT practice will be March 14-16, 2014. Typically, the host club is responsible for housing the visiting sailors and coaches, as well as helping them to and from the airport -- a great way to build friendships with Opti sailors across the country.

Blog E-Mail Technical Update
Many of you have still been receiving the blog e-mails from the old and unreliable "Feedburner" service. I believe all of you received a blank shell e-mail with "Header 1" and "Header 2" text that confused you. This is part of a Liberal Arts' major's attempt to learn RSS Blogging. I'm getting closer.
I have deleted the Feedburner service that was sending e-mail to about 40% of you. I have added the correct content to the new Mailchimp service, which seemed to be sending the e-mails to everyone, there was just nothing in them (until now). So until tomorrow, when you tell me different, I think this is working. If you receive this in your e-mail Inbox on Thursday morning shortly after 6:00 a.m., you're on the new, allegedly reliable service, and should be receiving all e-mails.
By the way, if you didn't get yesterday's e-mail (the last one sent from the old Feedburner service) about the pinnies and the J-80 sailing, please click here to read it directly on the blog. There's some cool stuff happening.

LYC Team Jerseys
We have LYC team pinnies (jerseys) available for sale in the Sailing Office. Pinnies are for all LYC sailors and to be worn outside of the lifejacket. This will help make your sailor more visible on the water, especially during races. These are one-size fits all. Sailors can pick up one pinnie for $20 (we can charge your YSG or member account). Get yours today!

Commodore's & Intermediate Sailors!
We have set up a special opportunity for your sailors to learn about a different type of sailboat: a J80. The J80 is typically a four person keel boat (instead of a retractable centerboard it has a fixed, lead weighted keel), with two sails.
The Best Boat Club of Fort Lauderdale http://www.fortlauderdaleboatrentals.com/membership.aspx is going to provide these boats to our team for free this Sunday, during regular practice hours. Sailors will have the opportunity to performs all of the duties of big boat sailing: skipper, crew, trimmer, grinder, foreman.
Sailors should meet at LYC at 1:30 in regular sailing attire. Commodore's and Intermediate sailors will ride in the Club's Whaler to Pier 66 with their coaches, sail the J80s in the ocean, and be back at LYC at 4:30. Feel free to call the sailing office if you have any questions...

E-Mail Service Roll Call
Bob Meagher here. If you're receiving this, and haven't received anything from the LYC Opti Blog for a little bit, then something's finally going right! Evidently Google & Blogger abandoned the service I used to mail the blog posts, so I've changed to a different one called Mailchimp that has a cool monkey in the logo. But that's not important -- the fact that you may have missed Philip's update yesterday is. Please do the following:
1) Click here and e-mail me to let me know you received this. I'm cross-checking responses manually against the mailing list to make sure we have no more widespread problems.
2) Visit the blog here to read important info on this and future weekends.
Thank you for your patience. Evidently, Mailchimp's supposed to be pretty reliable, but I'll probably take another roll call in another few weeks to make sure. If anyone has any direct experience with Mailchimp, I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

SUMMER SAILING!
What can my sailor do this summer?
We are looking forward to our Fun Sailing Camps beginning
June 10th! The summer sailing program is a great opportunity for
your young sailor to receive quality instruction in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
The camp is designed for novice, beginner sailors. So bring your friends that
don’t know how to sail and let them experience the joy of sailing.
The SKIPPER’S course is geared toward Commodore’s Fleet
sailors. The class will focus on intermediate race technique mixed with fun
games and activities to keep your sailors skills sharp, but also light-hearted
and fun.
The Summer Sailing Schedule:
- Session 1: June 10-June 21
- Session 2: June 24- July 3
- Session 3: July 15- July 26
- Session 4: July 29- August 9
“What about my sailor
who’s needs to train for USODA Nationals?”
We have scheduled four Advanced Opti clinics to prep your
advanced/intermediate racer for the competitive summer regattas we’ll be
supporting.
- · May 30-June 2 (Thursday and Friday HALFDAYS (3:30-7PM) / Saturday and Sunday FULLDAYS )
- · June 6- June 9th FULL DAY
- · June 17- June 20 FULL DAY
- · June 24- June 27 FULL DAY
Sailors who sign up are expected to bring their full
attention to these intense clinics. Sailors should be ready each morning for a strenuous,
full day of sailing and fitness conditioning. Sailors will be given homework, consisting
of articles and fitness workouts to develop as both intellectual and endurance athletes.
Sign up on the google doc.
Summer USODA Regattas!
LYC is looking forward to two events this summer: USODA
Nationals July 6-14 in Grosse Point, Michigan & USODA New England’s August
5-7 in Portland, Maine. Sign up on the google doc for these events. Green
fleets sailors interested in these regatta should talk to Juan or Phil before making plans.
USODA Nationals Team Race teams need to be finalized. We have
discovered a conflict of regatta dates that will affect many of our sailors who
qualify for international teams at the Team Trials regatta in Wisconsin. Any
sailor who qualifies and chooses to participate in the IOD North Americans, IOD
Europeans, IOD Worlds, or the Topsport Regatta will not be able race in the
team race and (possibly) fleet race portion of USODA Nationals.
What we need is a firm commitment from all sailors
interested in participating in Team Race nationals. Any sailor who commits will
be expected to race with their assigned team. Sailors who qualify for
international teams at Team Trials will be exempt from team race commitments.
Please sign up on the google doc for Team Race Nationals before MAY 5th.
LYC teams will be finalize as soon as USODA releases the international
team
lists after team trials (May 11th), to give sailors ample time to
practice together before
Nationals. Parent's be sure to open the "USODA Selection Process for
2013 Int'l Teams" doc available under "Program Docs" header for more
detailed information regarding international team's sign up, deadlines,
and budgets.
