Junior Olympics December 7th-8th

Opti Sailors & Parents,

Hope everyone had a delightful Thanksgiving.

This is a reminder that the Junior Olympic regatta is next weekend. There is still time to register and sign up if you haven't already.

A few notes for this week-

Normal practice schedule this week, but no advanced, intermediate, and commodore practice on December 7th and 8th due to the regatta.

I will have boats spots assigned for the truck and trailer.

Sailors that are traveling to the regatta and have requested a boat spot on the trailer will pack up their boats after practice.

I will be coaching at the regatta as well as Joakim and Juan. We will need to bring 3 coach boats. Are there any parents willing to tow?

See you on the water!

December Clinics

Dear Opti Sailors & Families,

Hope you are all doing well!  Some of you have already approached  me lately to ask me about our plan before the Orange Bowl Regatta.  This year we have two major clinics going on at the same time:  the Christmas Clinic out of the Coral Reef Yacht Club and the ‘Sail Strong’ Optimist Clinic out of the US Sailing Center in Martin County, both starting on Dec. 20th and going through the 23rd.  Four days full of sailing with lectures, video, debriefs, and the participation of some of the best coaches in the Optimist circuit.  Pricing is about the same as well, Christmas Clinic will be $464.00 vs. ‘Sail Strong’ at $460.00.  I think both are great opportunities and I strongly encourage all our LYC Intermediate and Advance fleet sailors to sign up and learn from the different coaches.

Please contact me if you have any questions/concerns, need more information on how to register, and for clinic schedules.

Best Regards,

Juan

FYI - I have done the  Christmas Clinic at Coral Reef in past years but this year I’ve decided to do the ‘Sail Strong’ Clinic with some of the US National Team coaches Peter Strong, Scott Norman and Mike Marshall.  The ‘Sail Strong’ Clinic features a sail testing for North Sails…we will cover a lot on sail tuning, shapes and performances based on the different cuts!

Introducing Joakim Karlsen

Hi.

My name is Joakim Tandberg Karlsen and I wanted to use this forum to introduce my self.

For the last 3 years I have been coaching in Newport, Rhode Island. It started out as just a summer program, but is now a program that lasts from March-November. People might now us as Brenton Cove or RIOT.

I am 30 years old and from Drammen, Norway. I grew up sailing in a very small town called Svelvik which has about 6500 people. I started sailing when I was 6 years old.

I am very excited to be here in Florida and at LYC. I remember from when I was 11 years old and wanted to go to this regatta called Orange Bowl. Unfortunately I never got the chance to do this, but I am very excited about coaching it for the first time with Juan and LYC.

If there is anything at all please do not hesitate to talk to me when we are at the sailing center. And if anyone is interested in private lessons, please get in touch with Julia Melton and we can set it up.

I do apologies for the bad grammar :)

Some of my merits:

- 2nd place, Opti European Team Race Championship, Berlin

- 1997 Opti Worlds, place not important :), Ireland

- Individual National Champion, Europe Dinghy

- Team Race National Champion, Europe Dinghy

- Ranked 3rd in the World for Men, Europe Dinghy

-  Coached Luke Ingalls 2013 Opti National Champion, Grosse Point

Very excited about the months I will stay her.

Best Regards

Joakim Karlsen

Hey! Intermediate! You're Up!!

Weekend Schedule

[This post was previously e-mailed directly on Friday afternoon, and added here for archive purposes.  The only difference is a clarification that Intermediate practices at its regular time of 12:30 on Saturday]

The forecast for tomorrow has led to some changes.

Joint Practice for Advanced & Intermediate:
We have scaled back Saturday's organized joint practice.  Volunteers who signed up to help Saturday morning are dismissed with their thanks but still needed Sunday.  Saturday night's organized cookout is also canceled.  Sunday's schedule is unchanged and we will be racing unless conditions require intermediate sailors to remain inshore.

Here's the Revised Summary for each LYC Opti fleet:

Saturday
Advanced:  Practice is scheduled.  Interested sailors may request to sail in the ocean with Juan, to be decided Saturday morning by Juan.  All others will practice inside with Joakim.
Intermediate = Practice inside with Joakim, regular time.
Commodore's = Coconut Grove Joint Practice canceled, no practice planned
Prams = Pram practice will proceed, but will involve primarily off-the-water lessons.  No children will be sent sailing in heavy winds, but they can still learn useful things on shore.

Sunday
Advanced = Racing, whole fleet
Intermediate = Racing, whole fleet outside (probably)
Commodore's = Regularly-scheduled practice inside
Prams = Practice as usual, weather permitting.

Plans for the Weekend

All Advanced & Intermediate sailors, the plan for this weekend is here.  Be rigged and ready at 9:30.  Yes, Juan is watching the forecast since all Intermediate & Advanced sailors are planned for the ocean.  If plans change, we'll post it here.

Commodore's sailors, remember to sign up on the spreadsheet to let us know you're planning to go to Coconut Grove this weekend, and load your boats on the truck after practice tomorrow.

Advanced/Intermediate Fall Series

Advanced and Intermediate sailors, your Fall Series days will be:
1) This Sunday, scored as part of Sunday's joint practice races, and
2) Sunday, November 17.
Both these will be scored for the Fall Sailing Banquet on December 3.

This Weekend = Ocean, Miami, Pram or Couch

There have been a number of posts lately about this weekend, and to avoid confusion, the short list below summarizes what our Opti fleet is doing this weekend.  If you sail an Opti at LYC you'll be involved in one of three things:

1) Prams (beginners) will have normal practice times at LYC, 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.   Prams will need to be on time, get their boats straight to the floating dock, and rig very quickly to launch by 9:30, because of #3 below.

2) Commodore's Sailors will be joining Coconut Grove Sailing Club this weekend for a joint Green Fleet practice.  Load boats after practice Thursday, and see a previous post in the blog for more info, and sign-up instructions.

3) Intermediate and Advanced Sailors will be practicing in the ocean with other clubs joining us.  All sailors need to arrive by 9:00 and rig on dollies on the concrete, not the floating dock.  See previous posts on this blog for more info and sign-up instructions.

Good Commodore's link, Sailing Banquet, and Fall Series

Sorry, Commodore's Fleet -- the spreadsheet to sign up for this weekend was restricted as "view only" and didn't let you sign up. Rest assured, this was my screw-up and nothing you were doing wrong.  It is corrected and available here.  Please sign up when you get this to let us know you're coming.  If you have questions, contact Meghan Carroll here.

On December 3 we will have our Opti-Fleet-Wide Fall Sailing Banquet at LYC.  Along with our Spring Banquet, this celebrates the accomplishments of the kids each season and lets us all get together in a different setting and have a good time.  Many sailors will receive awards for the two Fall Series days we have planned (see below) and perpetual trophies for a variety of accomplishments.  It's also a great time for our youngest sailors to stand with our oldest and build the friendships we take so much pride in.  All participants are welcome for dinner which will be billed to LYC or YSG accounts.  Dress is dressy casual.

The two upcoming Fall Series days for the Commodore's Fleet are Sunday, November 17, and Sunday, November 24.  Starting at normal practice time, a short set of races will be held each day in front of LYC, with the scores combined to determine the winners, announced at the Banquet on December 3.  Commodore's parents, if you would like to enjoy a short and beautiful day on the water helping run these, please let Bob Meagher know.

The Intermediate and Advanced Fall Series will include this Sunday's Joint Practice Races with the other clubs.  In addition to being scored against the visitors by fleet and overall, LYC kids will be scored separately as well as Advanced and Intermediate sailors.  The second series day will be scheduled shortly any announced soon.

Commodore's Fleet, Next Weekend Plans (Nov 9-10)

Below I've copy-pasted the agenda for next weekend as distributed by the coach at Coral Reef Yacht Club.  We are planning to take the LYC truck down towing a coach boat.  This means we are limited in this configuration to seven sailors.  If we have more, we'll figure it out, but it will be tough at the last minute so please sign up here on the list to tell us you're coming.

-----------------------------

Coaches, Directors, This is a preliminary schedule of events for the Green Fleet joint practice scheduled for the 9Th & 10th of November.

We all must remember that this event is run strictly by the coaches with no race committee support. So far joining us will be KBYC, CRYC, CGSC, UKSC and the latest to join us is LYC which will be bringing 8 or 9 Green Fleeters. Since CGSC will be hosting LYC and UKSC plus our own huge Green Fleet we thought it would be best if we set the courses more toward our side of the Bay.

This is just a preliminary draft and any feedback you would like to provide will be welcomed and appreciated.
