Hospice Regatta

Dear Opti parents,

As you may have heard, LYC is hosting the 4th annual Hospice by the Sea Regatta and the first ever Hospice Youth Regatta on May 17th.
Bret Moss, Bob Meagher and myself have been coordinating with the Hospice group to make this a successful event.
Now it is time to recruit some of you to help on the day.  We need people for registration, launch and recovery and race committee. If you would like to help please go to the sign up sheet on the blog.

Here again is the web site to enter your sailor for this event. You will have to print out the entry and mail it to the address on the bottom of the form. We would love to see 100% LYC participation for this inaugural event, plus it's helping to contribute toward a good cause.

There is also a Fundraising Challenge to help raise funds for Hospice by the Sea. If you are interested in making a donation, here is the link www.hpbcf.org/regatta_challenge

If you have any questions or suggestions, don't hesitate to call or email me.

Thanks

Dear Opti Families,

The Spring Fling Regatta at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove is coming up this weekend April 5-6.  This event is open to all our LYC Opti Fleets (Gold, Silver & Commodores).  If you are interested in signing up your sailors please do so by filling out your information on our blog under the 'Upcoming Regatta' folder and click here for registering at the Coral Reef Yacht Club site.

We are expecting a full trailer so please don't forget to sign up on our blog so we can assign you a trailer spot if need boat/gear transportation to and from the event.

As it is right now (participation list), we will have coach Juan for Gold & Silver on the championship course and Kyle Pond to cover the green fleet course.  This means we will need 2-4 volunteers to tow our coach boats down to CRYC and back.  Please let us know of your availability to tow a coach boat so we can count on you and plan accordingly.

Summer Sailing at LYC :)

Opti Enthusiasts,

I am pleased to announce that registration for the 2014 summer sailing program is now open. You can find the summer registration form in the program documents tab or click here.

This summer we are offering four two-week sessions to choose from with either full day or half day options (many sailors take multiple sessions). Session 1: June 9-20, Session 2: June 23-July 3, Session 3: July 7-18, Session 4: July 28-August 8.

Mercury Mentors (5-7 year olds)- Our new learn-to-sail class launched in the 2014 spring season! Sailors are taught in 15’ Mercury sailboats with a coach on board every boat.  This course is a great way for young kids to get comfortable sailing on the water. If you are interested in signing up for our spring Mercury Mentors, our second 8 week spring session will begin on Saturday, March 16th.

Beginner Opti (8-12 year olds)- This class focuses on basic boat handling for beginners. Children will learn how to steer and trim around a course, as well as learn points of sail. This class is designed to teach children self-reliance and esteem through sailing and the care of their boat. The curriculum incorporates fun games and activities to introduce sailors to basic seamanship. This class teaches sailing fundamentals and an introduction to racing.

Green Fleet (8-12 year olds)- Designed for sailors who have participated in at least one season of fall/spring  Green Fleet, this course is a great opportunity to keep racing over the summer! The program focuses on boat handling, tactics and strategy for racing. Classes incorporate fun days and a variety of drills and games.

420 Learn-To-Sail (13-16 year olds)- Students learn the fundamentals of sailing a double-handed 420 dinghy including rigging, sail trim, wind awareness, points of sail, boat handling, and safe capsize and recovery. This is a fun opportunity to learn to sail with a friend.

We are also introducing Green Fleet Friday racing that will begin on June 20th and continue each Friday throughout the summer sailing season. Informal races will be held in front of the club from 4:30pm-6pm. This is designated for any sailor who knows how to race around a course on their own. We encourage all one design fleets (Opti Green fleet, Opti Red White and Blue, Open Bic, 420, and Laser) to participate. There will be one course and each fleet will have its own start. Awards will be given after racing on the front lawn.

Please encourage family and friends to get involved with junior sailing this summer at LYC! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Julia Melton
