PARENT'S MEETING RECAP

Thanks to those of you who came to our Parent's Meetings last weekend. We are really looking forward to the start of the Fall season and hope you are too. For those of you who weren't able to make it, here's a recap of some of the improvements and amendments that we've made to the Opti program.

CURRICULUM
We've carefully planned the Fall season to make sure your sailors is prepared for each upcoming regattas site specific challenges. Something that we will continue to reinforce this season is that we don't NEED to go to the ocean every practice day. Of course, the ocean is an amazing place to sail and train. And we will be working on strength and technique to prepare for big ocean regattas like the USODA South East Champs, West Coast Champs, and Naples Cup regattas. But practicing inside will be very important when it comes to learning team race plays and situations, especially as we close in on the October 26-27 LYC Team Race regatta and near the end of the season as we look forward to the USODA Team Race Midwinter's in January.

LEARNING TOOLS
We will continue to use hi-tech tools to help your sailor's learning process. Video footage review will be used during each practice and reviewed more extensively. We'll continue to use the two way radios so coaches can speak directly to sailors while going through maneuvers and boat handling drills. We are really excited about using video to document big shifts and puffs on the inside that are very visible from the right vantage point.

To help close the gap in communication between coach > sailor > parent we will be using a report card system to evaluate each sailor's skill level among a broad range of skills, like: roll tacks, starting strategy, competitive edge, etc. Coaches will fill out report cards for sailors to bring home at least three times this season. This will be an important tool and help coaches re-emphasize which skills sailors need to work harder to hone and also give parents a more accurate understanding of where the sailor is at.

FITNESS
Full day weekend sailors sailors are to report to the sailing center classroom at 9:30am and be prepared for at least 30 minutes of physical fitness training. After our team workout sailors will re-group in the classroom for the daily briefing. Sailors will be released to rig as a team and launch independently. This new format will not only enhance the fitness and strength of our sailors, but will build team spirit and unity as we rig and launch together.

            >>Parents are kindly asked NOT to assist sailors with rigging or boat preparation<<

NEW BOAT
LYC has purchased a new coach boat boat that our Optimist program is excited to bring into the rotation to allow all groups to be well tended to by our coaching staff.

START OF FALL SEASON
Many of you have asked why we decided to start a weekend later this year. In year's past we have begun the Fall season during Labor Day weekend and ended the second weekend in December. This left a weekend off between the end of Fall and one of the biggest regattas of the year, Orange Bowl. This year we decided that it would be more beneficial to our sailors to push back the start one week so that we could continue to practice and sail as a team up to the Orange Bowl regatta. Our official start of the season is kicking off September 7th -- 8th for Sunday sailors. Weekday practice will begin the following week.

CLINICS
For sailors looking to get an extra weekend of practice make sure you get in touch with Juan Carlos who's putting together an advanced practice this weekend.

LABOR DAY SAILING

And don't forget to sign up for Glow Stick Sailing - Sunday night at 8:30pm (Sign up Friday night under the pavilion or find Phil Sunday afternoon)

Orange Bowl Fleet Limits

Something new popped up in the Orange Bowl Regatta Notice of Race -- fleet caps.  See below:

Don't know if this is a hard limit, or just a really good way to get registrations early (idea for Boomerang!).  Either way, if you know you're going, you'll want to register much sooner than in the past.  Orange Bowl Regatta Web Site here.  For newer sailors, the Orange Bowl Regatta has traditionally been a good "last Green Fleet" regatta, with our own Boomerang Regatta the following month as an easy transition to White Fleet.

Thanks to former Optimom, now Lasermom, Sharon Reinicke for the head's up.

Work Day and Parent Meetings This Saturday

Work Day, 9:30 a.m. Saturday
This Saturday is a fleet-wide work day at the Sailing Center for parents and sailors.  Come check back in and help get the fleet back in shape for the Fall, and enjoy a hot burger and cold drink with the team.  Please arrive at 9:30 ready to get some work done.

2013 FALL OPTIMIST SEASON

IT'S FINALLY HERE!The Lauderdale Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program is proud to announce that registration is open for the 2013 Fall Sailing Season. You will find the Fall season calendar at the Program Documents page, detailing practice and regatta dates for your planning. The LYC arrival dates are listed under each away regatta so that you can plan travel and lodging for you and your sailor. You will also find the appropriate sign up dates for those events listed at the bottom of the page.

We have carefully planned our Fall 2013 season to make sure your sailor is prepared to race in all of our favorite regional events. You’ll see that there are several joint practices we have scheduled with local competitive race teams, in addition to our regular practices during the weekends at LYC.

The coaches have mapped out a detailed curriculum for the fall season and have many new practice ideas and topics to focus on so that your sailor can work step by step at bettering his or her racing skills. New this season is the expansion of the Intermediate optimist group to allow sailors to get more detailed attention within a smaller group. This expansion will better the coaching ratio for all the groups and allow your sailor to work within his or her own skill set.
To track the improvement of your sailor we have created a ranking system, much like school progress reports, so that as a parent you can see what level your sailor is at when it comes to race skills. These report cards will be updated after each major regatta and on selected practice days throughout the season.

To continue to develop new learning techniques between coaches and sailors we will focus on using video review and chalk talks with sailors from each group. Coaches may also decide to hold practice in different sailing locations to work on particular site specific skills.
A few things I want to bring your attention to are a the updated policies that will be enforced this year: youth sailing guest payment, away regatta trailer policy, and regatta sign up with LYC for our planning purposes- they are explained at the bottom of the page.
To kick off the Fall season the Opti Committee is hosting a Cookout and Work day on Saturday, August 24th. This is an opportunity for us to regroup and prepare the boats for the fall season. After a few (short) hours of boat work we’ll enjoy a cookout, followed by an informational parent’s meeting to go over Fall specifics.

PRACTICE GROUPS, SCHEDULE, & STRUCTURE

PRAM This group is designed for sailors 5-7 years old.  Here, kids will learn basic concepts of seamanship and the sport of sailing in a fun way to work towards confidence and comfort on boats and on the water.
The kids in this group will learn how to control a sailboat through creative games and challenges. Sailors will learn skills such as knot tying, rigging and de-rigging, sailing physics, as well as proper terminology. A FEW IMPORTANT AMMENDMENTS TO OUR OPTIMIST PROGRAM

Program Fee Payment
To participate in the Sailing program children of LYC Members must submit registration paperwork and will subsequently be billed through their club accounts during regular monthly periods.  Youth Sailing Guests are required to complete the registration forms and must submit payment before their child may participate in any program activity of the season.

Regatta Registration Policy
To maintain proper coach-to-sailor ratios necessary for effective coaching and our sailors' safety, coaches are assigned to Florida regattas ten days prior to the event, based on the number of LYC sailors attending.  Adding coaches after this time, with associated coach boats, hotel, and travel arrangements, adds expense and impacts other LYC sailing programs.  Accordingly, the Optimist Committee has enacted the following policies.
Opti Sailing participants attending in-state events must notify the Sailing Department via email by the Wednesday 10 days prior to the event.
Participants who will be racing in Out-of-state and USODA regattas must sign up six weeks prior to the event’s start date.

Sailors registered with LYC by this time will receive boat transportation to the event in accordance with the policy below.  Sailors not registered with LYC for the event by this time will not be assured of transportation, and will be charged a fee of $100 to their LYC or YSG account.
Take a look at the Fall schedules for your sailor’s fleet and take note of sign up dates and LYC arrival to regatta site for your planning.

LYC Trailer Assignment Policy
Sailor’s will be given rack space in order of priority (top to bottom)
1. Commodore’s Fleet sailors
2. Families who tow a coach boat

You Gotta Regatta!

Hello Parents and Sailors,
I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Sharyn Wellnitz and I am the chairperson for the upcoming LYC
You Gotta Regatta
The reason for my email is to encourage you and your summer sailors to attend this event. This is going to be a really fun day and a taste of what it's like to be involved with the LYC sailing program year round. Youth sailing guests are welcome and encouraged to join LYC members to attend any and all sailing events and programs.

My son Tye, now 9, started in the Midshipmen - Learn to Sail Fleet when he was 7 and after a season when he turned 8 he was promoted to the Commodores - Learn to Race Fleet.  He has been participating in the Commodores Fleet for a year and a half now and we all love it. Tye started out as a very shy little boy who lacked self confidence and was reluctant to try anything new.  We have been so excited and amazed  to see him blossom and grow within himself and the sailing program . His confidence has increased and with every passing day he is more and more excited to try new things. He is even flourishing at school and his teachers have made numerous remarks on how delighted they are to see how his self esteem grows.

In the past 18 months we have had the opportunity to participate in most of the local sailing regattas which have been held in fun places such as The Florida Keys, Naples and Fort Myers on The Gulf Coast and Jensen Beach on The Treasure Coast. Tye has made so many friends and there is a real camaraderie between the young sailors. The rest of our family have also enjoyed making new friends and it's great being able to get out of town as regularly as 1 weekend a month to fun places with them all. And it's not bad being able to hang out on the beach or a boat with friends whilst watching our children sail and have loads of fun! Just to reiterate - it's loads of FUN!

So I encourage you to come out and join us on..
Saturday, August 10th from 11.00am - 2.30pm.
Watch your kids have fun and see the sailing skills they've learnt over the summer and feel free to join in as this will be fun for the entire family.

If you have any questions or would like any further information on You Gotta Regatta or any other LYC Sailing program questions don't hesitate to contact me.

Looking forward to meeting you next Saturday!

Regards

Sharyn Wellnitz
